Homework Review - Week 2

Review Notes
  • great job overall
  • great job on the volume and quality of work
  • keep the lay-in clean and abstract as much as possible, details like anatomy are hurting the clarity of the drawing
  • clarity is more important then detail. If you are not sure about anatomy or detail, then leave it out.
  • proportions feel a little long overall.

Training Materials - Week 2

2D Abstraction for the Head & Figure

Objective:
  • Lay-in the figure using simple marks and geometric shapes
  • simplify the anatomy and smaller forms of the figure into simple marks (straight, c, s)
  • capture and describe the 'thrust' or action of the pose and the action of smaller forms

Method:
  1. indicate the head and features using simple shapes and marks
  2. connect or relate head to the torso
  3. lay-in the torso, starting with the thrust or action of the pose
  4. abstract or simplify the limbs using the outer edge/contour of the forms
  5. refine shapes as needed or time permitting.

For Homework:

Draw 100 -150 figure sketches in this manner:
  • Spend 2-5 minutes max per sketch
  • draw from life as much as possible, 3x per week is ideal
  • any medium, charcoal on newsprint or ball point pen is recommended

-Excellent overall, very few comments
-volume of work/number of drawings was awesome!
-breasts felt a little high on the chest, needed subtle adjustment
